GENERAL
Why don't you use fresh flowers?
Simply put, fresh flowers will rot inside epoxy resin. Resin doesn’t like moisture so anything imbedded in resin must be completely dry.
I’ve heard silica gel and resin are toxic, is it safe to use?
When used as directed and with proper PPE/ventilation, silica gel and resin have been deemed safe for home use. Although silica gel and epoxy resin are not inherently dangerous, there are some potential health risks you should be aware of when working each. Inhalation of dust from silica gel and fumes from epoxy resin can cause inflammation and irritation of the nose, throat, lungs and eyes. ALWAYS wear, at the very least, a dust mask and eye goggles when working with silica gel and epoxy resin.
Can I use the silica gel packets that I find in shoe boxes?
Unfortunately, those little packets contain beaded silica gel, which will leave pits or dents on delicate petals. The best silica gel in which to dry flowers is very fine and has the texture of sand. Please do not try to grind up beaded silica gel in a blender or food processor in an attempt to create sand-like silica gel. As mentioned above, the dust from silica gel can be harmful.
Is silica gel reusable?
Yes! Silica gel can be “recharged” (i.e. dehydrated) and used over and over again.
Can I use a silicone baking pan as a mold?
When I first started out, I tried silicone baking pans but quickly realized most didn’t have a shiny surface or were too flimsy to produce really nice pieces. These days there are lots of options when it comes to molds and you can find links to what I use here.
Can I use polyester resin? Is it different from epoxy resin?
Polyester resins are TOXIC and should be avoided. Polyester resins are less expensive, have very strong fumes and used mainly in industrial applications. Generally, epoxy resins are solvent-free and safe to use at home in a well ventilated area.
Do all resins yellow over time?
Unfortunately, this is true but some brands are better than others when it comes to yellowing. High-quality epoxy resins add UV protectants to keep the resin from yellowing as quickly. Also, it is important to keep resin keepsakes out of direct sunlight. The more exposure to sunlight, the faster the resin will yellow.
